Abraham Lincoln Grade School

Lincoln School was three blocks east of Low Street. The school and playground took up the entire block bounded by Lee Street on the west, Koch Street on the east, Hickory Street on the South, and Miller Street on the north. The playground had two basketball goals and two fence backdrops for softball or kickball.

Some favorite teachers were Mrs. Upton and Miss Weber. Other favorite teachers were not Mrs. Maurer and Mrs. Abbot.

Mr. Turner was the janitor.

I graduated from Lincoln School in 1986. Miss Suzie was the janitor when I went there and my teachers from K-6 were Mrs. Neal, Mrs Grimes, Mrs Carey, Mrs Haarstead, Mrs Albritton, Mr Parrish, and Mrs Daniels (Addicks). That was a superb school to get an education!

I had Mrs. Maurer for 4th and 5th grades. My wife and I bought our 2nd house and actually ended up living next door to her for about 10 years. She was not at all as a neighbor as she was as a teacher and she was great with our kids.

Yes, Mrs. Anliker taught 5th/6th grade, her husband Sam taught choir and led the barbershoppers at BHS as well. I remember Mrs. Satchell who worked in the office and Mr. Turner. Mrs. Adams taught Kindergarten, I think Mrs. Hanfland taught 2nd or 3rd grade. This was in the late 60's, early 70's.
